Match Reports 2010/11
Chatham Town 4 Merstham 4
A hugely entertaining game at Maidstone Road on Saturday saw Chatham Town take the lead no fewer than four times – but also saw visitors Merstham equalise four times.

Merstham dominated the early exchanges, and twice James Tedder was forced to come out of his area and head to safety.  But no goal was scored, and, slightly against the run of play, it was Chatham Town who scored first after 17 minutes.  Anthony Hogg took the ball down the right, cut inside, and then made a perfect long pass to the back post.  Billy Shinners rose to beat goalkeeper Chatfield to the ball and headed firmly down into the net to give Chatham the lead.

Merstham wasted a good chance on 26 minutes when they blasted over the bar from close range, while at the other end an Uche Ibemere cross found Hogg, but his shot was saved.  Then Merstham equalised a minute later through Marshall – one all.

A Nick Hegley corner forced a good save from Chatfield with 34 minutes played, but Chatham took the lead again seven minutes later.  After a long clearance from Tedder, again the goal came from a cross from the right.  This time it was Brad Potter who supplied the cross, and it was Leroy Huggins who rose above the goalkeeper and looped the ball neatly over his head into the net.  Merstham equalised again before half time though, when Cheadle headed in from a corner.  So 2-2 at half time, but surely the game would have to slow down in the second half.

No one had told Brad Potter though, and two minutes into the second half his fine strike from the edge of the area took a slight deflection and left Chatfield stranded.  Merstham should have equalised on 54 minutes when no one managed to get on to a shot which flashed across the area, but five minutes later they did equalise for the third time.  Again the goal was a cross from the right met with a head; this time the scorer was Duke.

On 68 minutes, Chatham took the lead yet again with the goal of the season.  Billy Shinners unleashed a spectacular volley from just outside the area on the left, and the goalkeeper didn’t even move until he turned round to get the ball out of the goal.  A solo effort from Huggins five minutes later was cleared for a corner, and by then it was Merstham’s turn to score.  Once again it was a headed goal, with substitute White getting his name on the scoresheet.

Ibemere, Shinners twice, Hegley and substitute Matt Solly all went close as the minutes ran out, while Merstham too had their chances to snatch a late winner.  But there were no more goals as the game ended at four goals apiece, and the two teams left the field to enthusiastic applause from the breathless crowd.

Ramsgate 2 Chatham Town 1

Monday 3rd January 2010

Chatham Town dominated for long periods at Ramsgate on Monday, and led with 87 minutes played.  Even so, they were to return home with no points.

The early part of the game was tentative – the ball rarely left the middle third of the pitch, and although Ramsgate did force a corner after seven minutes it was easily cleared by the Chatham defence.  Ramsgate created a couple more chances which came to nothing, James Tedder treated the crowd to the rare sight of a back pass from a goalkeeper, and Ramsgate missed badly on 21 minutes when an unmarked player blasted wide.

Almost at once, the ball was at the other end and Ramsgate’s defence played their goalkeeper Smelt into trouble.  Uche Ibemere nearly took advantage, but again the chance to came nothing,  Brief alarm a moment later when a Tedder clearance was charged down, but the ball rebounded into the keeper’s arms.

Chatham’s first real shot on goal came on 27 minutes.  Kane Rice made a good run down the left and then passed the ball inside, and it was passed back to him in a shooting position, but his effort was well saved by Smelt.  An Ibemere cross on 31 minutes was cleared but not without claims of handball, and then two minutes later Billy Shinners shot just past the right hand post after receiving an excellent pass from Jason Barton on half way.

Chances were few in the remainder of the first half, although Ibemere did force two corners in the dying moments of the half.  But 0-0 at half time, and there seemed every chance that it might stay that way.

Chatham made a bright start to the second half though, and with six minutes played Shinners again went close, this time shooting just over the bar.  Four minutes later, and a Rice cross from the left would have given Shinners a free header, but he was just unable to reach the ball.  A Rice free kick on 58 went just over the bar after Shinners had been fouled just outside the area, but still the game remained goalless.

Then on 61 minutes, Chatham took the lead.  Ibemere made good ground on the right hand side, and crossed past one player to Rice, whose shot from ten yards out left the goalkeeper stranded.

Chatham had dominated for some time, but after conceding a goal Ramsgate came right back into the game.  Four names went into the referee’s book as the temperature increased on the pitch, while dropping rapidly off it.

With three minutes to play, a Ramsgate shot was well cleared by Tedder and the resulting corner too was safely dealt with.  But a minute later, Ramsgate were level when Schulz scored from close range.  At once first Shinners, then Ibemere, and then Brad Potter went close for Chatham but none scored.

Four minutes into injury time, Ramsgate were awarded a penalty.  Lovell made no mistake and gave his team the lead for the first time.  In the dying seconds Gary Ward forced a last ditch clearance from a diving Ransgate player, but the whistle went to leave Ramsgate 2-1 winners.

Walton & Hersham 0 Chatham Town 0
Chatham Town looked the better side for most of the 90 minutes, but could not break the deadlock as Saturday’s game at Walton and Hersham ended goalless.

Chatham dominated the early exchanges, and Uche Ibemere, recalled to the starting line up, went close after just four minutes.  Walton and Hersham took a bit longer to start playing, but when they did they too created a few chances, and after a corner on 18 minutes a header went just over the bar.

A minute later, and good play by Ibemere on the left saw him beat a man just inside the penalty area.  He could perhaps have shot himself, but instead passed to Ray Powell on the right, who blasted a shot which went wide.  There were few chances in the rest of the first half, although Kane Rice went close from distance eight minutes before the break.  It was perhaps fortunate that the half time whistle went when it did; the game had become rather combative and was  threatening to get unpleasantly physical, but the break prevented that from happening.

James Tedder had had little to do in the first half, but four minutes into the second he was forced to make a fine save from a Walton and Hersham free kick.  A minute later, and neat interplay between Leroy Huggins and Joe Fuller saw Huggins head for goal from close to the penalty spot.  But Walton and Hersham goalkeeper Williams made an excellent save at full stretch to deny him, and the teams stayed level.

Fuller was in the action again just before the hour mark, but slipped when in a good shooting position and so the opportunity was lost.  Six minutes later, and Chatham appealed for a penalty when the ball seemed to strike a defender on the hand, but referee Mr Neil was having none of it.  A good ball from Fuller on 72 minutes found Ibemere in a crowded penalty area; he did well to get a shot in, but it went over the bar.

With seven minutes to play, Walton and Hersham missed an open goal; a late winner would have been more than they deserved.  After a brief absence through injury, Nick Hegley came on as a second half substitute and made a good run down the left when he ran onto a loose ball, but he slipped after he had taken the ball into the area and his shot was well wide.

Walton and Hersham again went close as the game went into injury time; Tedder was forced to punch clear from the edge of the area as a home player rushed towards him.  As time ran out Chatham won a series of corners, but were unable to force the ball into the net.  So a goalless draw perhaps the inevitable result of a game which was not enthralling, but Chatham will certainly be the happier team with the point.

Chatham Town 0 Godalming Town 2

Saturday 13th November

Although they made a bright start to the game, Chatham Town fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Godalming Town on Saturday.

Only two minutes had been played when Kane Rice, playing on the left wing, shot from the edge of the penalty area.  The goalkeeper could not save his effort cleanly, but his defence came to his rescue and cleared the ball.  Rice was in the action twice more in the first quarter hour and went just wide with another shot, but then Godalming Town came into the game.  James Tedder made a couple of good saves to keep the teams level after Godalming breaks, but the visitors from Surrey took the lead after 25 minutes when Hennessey rose above two defenders to the right of a crowded penalty area to head his team into the lead.

Chatham Town created some good chances towards the end of the half, but every time they got in a shot a Godalming player seemed to shoot out a limb and clear the ball.  The visitors doubled their lead just before half time when Gavin Smith scored from close range, so as the teams turned around Chatham had much to do in the second half.

The second half opened quietly, but with twelve minutes played Leroy Huggins gathered a loose ball just outside the penalty area and unleased a shot which hit the post – Chatham’s closest approach to goal yet.  Godalming twice went close five minutes later when Tedder was tested first by a free kick and then by the resulting corner, but both times he kept the ball out.

A good run from Rice on 66 minutes saw him take the ball down the left wing, beat two players and bring the ball into the penalty area, but then his shot was easily saved.  Thereafter, the game became rather scrappy and efforts on goal were few, and even the introduction of two substitutes could not bring about a repetition of Chatham’s late comeback at Faversham on Tuesday.  With time almost up, Godalming’s Gavin Smith – the scorer of their second goal – suffered a leg injury which looked serious and had to leave the field on the stretcher; we hope the injury is not as bad as it appeared.  That injury meant that five minutes of stoppage time were added, but try as they might Chatham could not score a goal to set up a tense close to the game.

No midweek game this week, and then next Saturday Chatham Town travel to Surrey to play Walton and Hersham.

Faversham Town 2 Chatham Town 1
Chatham Town suffered their first defeat in five games when they lost 2-1 on a frustrating evening at Faversham Town on Tuesday.

After a bright start, Nick Hegley came close to opening the scoring on eight minutes when he was put through unmarked on the left, but his shot went just wide.  Both teams created chances in the early part of the game, but all too often the final ball was lacking, and solid defending ensured that the game remained scoreless until 21 minutes had been played.  Faversham Town then took the lead, perhaps slightly against the run of play, when Abel recovered the ball from a defensive error and shot low to the left past James Tedder.

Chatham Town came straight back and created a chance within seconds of the restart, but for the rest of the first half neither team could break down the opposing defence.  There was a blow for Chatham after 35 minutes when Hegley limped off, but this did at least give Paul Foley the chance to bring on Kane Rice to make his debut for the club.  Rice, who has joined from Maidstone United, can play as a winger or as a defender and made contributions in both roles during the evening.

And Rice it was who came close to scoring an equaliser eight minutes into the second half.  He cut in from the left and unleashed a shot from the edge of the area, but it went narrowly past the top corner of the goal.  Seven minutes later, and Rice on the left played the ball right across the penalty area to Kevin Winchcombe down the right, but again nothing came of the attack.

Faversham went two up on 62 minutes, with Abel again the scorer.  This time Chatham had cleared the ball from a corner, but only as far as Abel outside the penalty area who curled the ball around Tedder for an excellent goal.

Leroy Huggins went close with fifteen minutes to play when the goalkeeper just beat him to a through ball from Joe Fuller, while a few minutes later Faversham nearly scored a third from a breakaway.  Substitute Wright gathered the ball after a Chatham corner broke down, and took it half the length of the pitch before passing, but Tedder made an excellent save.

Chatham introduced another new signing as a second half susbtitute in striker Billy Shinners who has joined from Erith Town.  Shinners got in a good shot in the closing minutes, but it was well saved by Overland in the Faversham goal.  But Chatham were not to be denied a goal, and Huggins scored it in injury time.  Good work by Lee Maskell down the right saw him pass to Matt Solly, whose clever backheel found Huggins in perfect shooting position.

Had there been another five minutes to play, Chatham might have equalised, but it was not to be and the whistle blew on a wet night in Faversham to leave the home club 2-1 winners.
